Headers and Exhaust

Hello all. Couple questions, one has anyone ever ran Hedman Headers on their cars? I am told by Summit Racing that the only set of full length headers they sell that will fit my 70 cutlass supreme without modifications are a set of Hedman 1 3/4" tube headers? From what I have found they have good reviews. Second when I asked about exhuast systems he recommended Pypes brand systems rather than Magnaflow or Flowmaster. I checked out their website and they had a lot of good reviews. My question is can anyone tell me the pros of running a x-pipe over a straight pipe system? And the difference between turbo and chambered mufflers. I will be putting this on a mild build 70 350 with around 9.5 to 1 comp. and 350 hp with th350 tranny 2200 converter and 3.42 limited slip rear end. Any thoughts are appreciated. Any other header and exhaust system suggestions would be appreciated as well. Thank you

There are a great many, and I mean a great many threads with discussions pertaining to exhaust systems. My personal opinion is to go and listen to others exhausts at say car shows, find one you like the sound of, and duplicate it. Exhaust is very subjective, one mans music, is anothers headhache.

I figured there had to be a bunch of threads regarding that but when I searched headers and exhaust nothing particular came up. I guess my main question is just the straight pipe x-pipe difference and the difference between chambered and turbo mufflers.

Try searching "headers" and "supreme":

Go with the chambered mufflers over the turbo mufflers if you want more horsepower. I have the Pypes exhaust on my 71 cutlass and its a nice exhaust system. I have the straight pipes with street pro mufflers. I don't know what the difference would be between the X pipe and straight pipes.

X pipe will give you a little more on the bottom end/midrange torque side of things. Balances the exhaust pressures a bit better than the H pipe design and will be slightly quieter. I looked into a few of these when I decided on the exhaust and went with the X pipe over straight duals. Ended up with Hooker long tubes, 3" collector, 2.5" SS with the X. X pipe mounts just behind the tailstock on my TH350.

Thanks for the advice guys. I have decided to go with the Hooker long tubes with the pypes dual setup with x-pipe and chambered mufflers.

I have had Headman headers. Worked out fine. I had a pesky issue with two of the bolts backing out and developing an exhaust leak. Changed out the gaskets annually. But I didn't have them surfaced. Now days I get everything surfaced before installing. And I prefer those old heavy exhaust manifolds. Less maintenance issues, and less heat under the hood. But more restrictive.

I have the X-pipe on my convertible with Flowmasters. Sounds good. I am putting strait pipes with Magna Flows on my 69. That should be done this week. We'll have to wait to see how they sound. Hopefully they'll be just fine. Good luck with your car. Recommend you read everything the guys on this site have to say, They have good insights. Exception being me. I am still experimenting and learning. And reading the threads posted here.
