Gas tank painting or coating

There are no new gas tanks available for the 61-63 Cutlass and Jetfire. I am wondering how to get that original zinc plating look. If I paint it I don't want to use the traditional metallic paint because I think that looks worse than anything else that I could do. If I can't get the original look I am thinking I will just paint it a gray color.

Anyone have any options for this?

I wonder how well it would look if it were cleaned to bare metal and clear coated?

Do you have a picture of how it turned out? I thought that looked like Stainless steal metallic paint.

Regardless of what you do for the outside make sure you coat the inside as well:

Here's the paint Ely mentioned:

FWIW, when I coated the inside of the gas tank on my 71 98 I used the restoration kit from Eastwood. I painted the exterior with RustOleum and it looks great.

From what I am looking into, nobody can do a tank. I want that original look but the metallic paint just don't get there. I may try to clean and clear one to see how that looks. I think it is going to be the closest.

Olds64, I will likely have to if I can't find a better tank. This one looks nearly spotless inside but it does have a pin hole from the outside on the seam. Now that I have used different style of lines I like the POR liner the best. I don't use much of there product but the tank liner is great. I have not used the Eastwood stuff but I bet it is close to the same as POR.

POR makes excellent products. I used their high temperature paint on my engine. It's great.
