Fuel gauge
#3
Remove the wire that goes to the sending unit from the gauge and with the key on see if it goes past full, then ground the wire and see it goes to E. If it does then the problem is with the sender.

So it won't read higher than ⅓.
The gauge reads Full when there is little to no continuity (broken sender wire or ground), and Empty when there is essentially no resistance between the gauge and ground.
Therefore, you cannot have a bad connection or a broken wire, and it is unlikely that you have a short.
That leaves a problem with the sender (or maybe the gauge) as the most likely problem.
See this thread for more information.

I know it's frustrating, and I'm sorry I don't have any specific help for you, but we only need one thread on the subject.
That being said, and given what was discussed in the other thread, it sounds like the problem is with the gauge itself.

I merged your threads. Your problem is with the fuel sender, your test with grounding the wire and leaving it disconnected proves that everything from the sender forward is working properly. Either you are getting bad senders or its not internally getting a ground through the tank.
