Fan Clutch Information/Advice

I am restoring my ‘70 W30. It’s a 4-speed car with HD cooling. IF I decide to hunt for an NOS fan clutch what is the correct part # ? (I have seen #401797 and #4949861). What is the correct part # for my application ?

IF I decide to buy a correct used fan clutch I would obviously have it restored mechanically and aesthetically. I recall a Corvette guy ?? that does this type of work but it’s not cheap ? Anyone have a ballpark figure of the cost to restore and his contact info ?

Thanks guys - Mike.

The PIM shows 401797 with 4939873 as an equivalent option (both are stamped "OS").
4949861 (code "OR") is shown in the PIM as used on 1970 A/C cars, so not a W30 4spd.
My Jan 1972 Parts Book shows 4949861 as applicable for just about every HD cooling application (A/C, O.A.I., etc). I suspect this is a case of one part number superseding the factory-installed part number for replacement purposes. Another example of why you can't rely on the Parts Book for info on how the car left the assembly line.

the OS is also correct for my 68 with heavy duty cooling and I would also like to know if there is anyone out there that can restore a clutch assembly as I have a couple of used clutches that need new bearings and seals

Is it correct to say that a ‘70 W30 with a 4-speed and a 3.42 rear came stock with a 3 core radiator, straight 4 blade fan (no fan clutch) and no radiator shroud ?

Could you upgrade (order and pay for the option) to the Heavy Duty Cooling Option on this car as equipped ? If you could - what did you get in the package (ex. 4 core radiator, clutch fan, shroud etc.) ?

Is this the difference between V01 and V02 ?

Thanks - Mike

The correct code for your fan clutch is “OR” and not “OS”. Your repair manual will show “OR” and the PIM shows or “OR” as well. The application is 4400, 4800 with C-60.

The 4400 is separated with a comma. The next application is 4800 with C-60 which is a vista cruiser with A/C.

Good luck

The 4 speed W30 with a 3.42 to 1 rear took a V02, Heavy Duty Radiator with 2.00 inch core; 19" blade with fan clutch; no shroud.

Could you upgrade (order and pay for the option) to the Heavy Duty Cooling Option on this car as equipped ? If you could - what did you get in the package (ex. 4 core radiator, clutch fan, shroud etc.) ?

Heavy Duty Engine Cooling & Alternator (Y72) was not available with V02. Keep in mind heavy duty cooling can be a confusing concept. In essence, V02 is a level of HD cooling, just as V01 is. Two things to keep in mind during this time period is that there is Heavy Duty Cooling and there is Heavy Duty Radiators. It helps to be specific when using these terms to reduce confusion.

Is this the difference between V01 and V02 ?
V01 = Heavy Duty Radiator 2.70 inch core,
V02 = Heavy Duty Radiator 2.00 inch core.

Thanks - Mike
Ref: PIM Sec 11/pg 50 and RocketDevo

Hope this helps.

Too, the Feb 1970 parts book shows OR (4949861) clutch used with 4400 OAI, as already pointed out #2.

I commented on this thread specifically because post number 2 states that the “OR” clutch was not used on 4-speed W-30s. Which is not correct from my experience.

Joesw31 I agree OR is correct for 4-speed W30, but in post #2 it was also stated the OR clutch was used on 442 OAI. It was my attempt to be fair.

Moreover, this topic has been well rehearsed on this site.

Fan clutch application has been thoroughly hashed on this site for many years.
