exhaust odor ?

Considering purchase of a 72 Supreme. I don't go around inhaling exhaust for kicks but owner pointed it out the so i gave it a good sniff.

Exhaust certainly doesn't smell quite right...not overpowering but noticeable putrid/rancid odor. Not a 'sweet' coolant smell I would recognize and not normal. Not rotten egg smell / sulphur smell either.

Impossible to describe in words...but would Stabil or octane boost in a tank create a nasty exhaust odor ?

anything else ?

You can probably chock it up to todays gasoline blends and older cars lack of catalytic converters. After I back my Cutlass into the garage, I have to leave the doors open for a while to allow the smell to dissipate.

actually no, this is different from what I am familiar with re: usual odor...but I haven't ever used Stabil or other additives so i wonder if that might be the cause in this 72.

How long has the car been sitting?

Long ago, my father bought a car that had been sitting for a while. It too had a horrible smell coming out of the exhaust, but otherwise ran fine. The problem turned out to be a mouse had crawled into the tailpipe, got caught somehow in the muffler and died. Needless to say, when the car was started the mouse started "cooking" (lovely smell that was). The good part was that it was an easy fix. We swapped out the latter part of the exhaust system and everything was fine.
