engine compartment ac unit

is it ok to remove from firewall ac unit and still have a heater // 1968 cutlass

No. It will require the non a/c air box OR a modification to the existing box in order to move heated air into the cabin.

You can remove the evaporator from the AC box and then seal the AC box. You'll be able to run vent & heat with your OE AC controls.

As noted above, the box on the firewall provides the airflow path from the blower motor to the heater core and vents in the car. You need something there - either the original HVAC box or an aftermarket "A/C delete" box. Also keep in mind that on A/C cars the flapper doors in the box under the dash are operated with engine vacuum, which means that you need to retain the original A/C control panel and the vacuum hoses and reservoir (ball) on the engine side of the firewall.
