This is disturbing....

http://www.oldchevydocumentation.com/

I read about this site in this months Muscle Car Review. Looking at the pictures I think I will never buy a documented Chevrolet. How can one tell whats real and whats fake? If I want, I can buy a Dynacorn Camaro body, build it with reproduction parts, then buy all the documents and make myself a brand new documented SS 396.

I am soooo happy Oldsmobiles arent as popular as Chevys.

That's beyond disturbing. Borders on fraudulent to me.

But documentation is what draws out the stupid money for Chevrolets, so it's not surprsing someone would try to capitalize on it.

What, no VIN tags?

Maybe you just need to know the "secret handshake"

vins...

I seem to remember that a company was making reproduction cowl tags, but you needed the paperwork LOL... not sure about the window vins, but I have seen them on ebay cowl tags and vins, so you could buy one of these and make your self a 1 of 1 I truly believe this is why the various marti reports etc are so valuable I wish we had that for oldsmobiles

cool, now you can have made a '68-9 LAN trim tag with "344" body style!

Why not a '68 H/O with "34467" body style, and "Z Z" or "- -" Paint?

The guy that bought my TOTALLY non-numbers matching Chevelle took my novelty window sticker I bought for it, removed it from it's lamination and stained/aged/tattered it and then relisted the car for sale as having it's original window sticker from 1971!! Guys like that ruin the hobby!

That same site was advertising it's 'authentic' products a few years ago. IIRC to get the brown aging on the paper they spray it with milk and bake it in an oven.

Makes you wonder about the authenticity of some of the BJ big $$$$ cars doesn't it?

Hopefully you don't get a data plate (etc) without sending them your old one.

Not a chance. I've already seen numerous repopped data plates on Oldsmobiles, and they were *all* altered from from the original.
Sad, but it is quite rare that someone is looking to simply replace a missing or damaged plate.
And I have examples of before and after tags with the same body number and altered data.
I will repeat: There is only one reason to alter numbers, and that is for FRAUD. And lame excuses only last a short time until it becomes pure FRAUD.

Pretty soon you will need....

This equipment when purchasing a "legit" rare musclecar

you should combine it with this piece of equipment and a significant power source in case answers reviewed with above equipment are unsatisfactory

Somewhat related, somewhat of a tangent:

http://www.streetlegaltv.com/feature...challenger-rt/

Mopars have had altered data tags for quite awhile now. The build sheet can help clear things up, but nothing's 100% certain because there's a guy or two selling blank build sheets.

Several years back the Pontiac-Oakland Club International began allowing cars on their showfields with altered data plates, ostensibly for people who had done a color change on their car.

I still say it was done strictly so Tempest/LeMans could be passed off as authentic numbers GTO's. It also had the effect of making me cancel (not non-renew, CANCEL) my POCI membership after some 20 years. I refuse to be a part of such chicanery.

There's a current thread on ROP http://72.22.90.30/phpBB2/viewtopic....324&highlight= concerning a lawsuit and summary judgment against someone who sold a car that turned out to not be what the seller had claimed. Never mind it's in Australia- fraud is fraud, and as Kurt has said, there is only one reason to alter numbers, and that is for FRAUD.

Money has ruined this hobby. It's also exposed a lot of "reputable" car people as nothing more than stereotypical used car salesmen.

With Pontiacs, you can never trust someone's PHS, as people have altered them or even faked them. If you're interested in a Pontiac, it is safest to order your own PHS.
