Are you using it for anti-theft?

 

I don't use my dash cam for anti-theft. Mostly use it in my daily drivers just for extra proof in the event of an accident. It certainly has the option to start to record while the car is sitting though.

This is the camera I picked up if you're curious.

 

How does the camera help in an accident if it isn't pointing in the right direction? I imagine it's pointed out the front window most of the time. What if you get hit from the side or the rear? How does it help in these situations?

As far as anti-theft, again, what if it's not pointing in the right direction? I imagine the camera is set to point at the driver's side when the car is left unattended. So the thief breaks into the car from the passenger side and disables the camera without the camera ever capturing an image of the thief.

In short, it has always seemed to me that dash cameras have been oversold in terms of value in theft or accident situations. Most of the time, people have them just so they can record the crazy behavior of other drivers and then post the video on Facebook or something.

 

Not only does a dash cam record stupid stuff from other drivers, it also records yours.

 

I've thought about getting a dash cam. Mostly to monitor all the whack jobs when I drive. Especially when I drive my 71 98 or classic Ford truck. I know they make dash cams that have a rear view camera too, I'm just not sure which one is the best buy.
