Cupholder Ideas?

After re-wiring my car last summer, everything is running great, and I'm really enjoying the ride (knock on wood)!

I have a 1968 Cutlass convertible with an automatic console shifter.

There used to be cup holders that fit on the transmission tunnel, but I can't find them anywhere.

Anyone have any ideas where I can find one, or have better cupholder ideas for my setup?

I don't like the cupholders for the door...and nothing permanent.

Thanks!

Why do you want to introduce open containers of liquid into the interior of your nice car?

I just usually crotch my soft drinks. I got racing buckets and a b&m pro shifter with no console. Im a fan of double gulps so you see where my dilemma is lol.

I don't drink and drive. I live in the desert where we have 120* summer temps with single digit humidity and even with that I don't suffer from dehydration between the time I leave the house and and when I reach my destination. Driving requires full attention and having a container of fluid in hand is an unnecessary distraction.

I have bench seats, so mine is different. How about this?

I like that console. I may have to consider something like that for my '64 Dynamic 88--whenever it finally comes my way.

Google cup holder there is a lot of options like mini consoles ( could be placed behind the current console to individual cupholders

i dont have pics..i sold the car a decade ago, but i just cut some thin ply wood, hole sawed 2 holes, and slid it in the console glove box..i used 1/4 round as the spacer to get it the right height...and just closed the console when i got some where...absolutely ruined the the flocking... but the insert slid in and out, and i could clean it up..or try..it got this white funk..lol..smelt like fritos...and was ugly in there..but damn-it..i had a cup holder..a 2 hole-er at that

I was laughing when I saw that too. I made this holder for my column shift auto trans hump with some left over plywood, $8 worth of vinyl, $6 for 2 boat cupholders. and a $2 eBay USB male-to-female charger plug (phone-to-RetroSound radio). Not really pretty, but does the job.

That's nicely done, and discreet.

Discreet was the goal Eric. The black on black was meant to blend in.

Hope I inspired you rhett838!

I do not mean to hijack a thread here, but I will defend my purchase when I like the product. I hate door hanging cup holders. They almost always fall off. Since I did not want something on the trans. tunnel, because of the bench seat, I would have had to reach to far forward and then down to get my drink for it to be comfortable while driving. With this, it sits on the bench with a strap that goes under the seat to hold it tight (so it can also be removed easily if all 3 kids and my wife are cruising with me). It matches my interior (unlike the picture, mine is white) and it's a comfortable arm rest with plenty of storage inside.

It may not be right for everyone, but I picked it up from OPGI 4 years ago on sale for $85 and it works for me.

Yeah, I was looking at those yesterday. It's expensive but really I do like the design and I've just about sold myself on the idea of putting one in my '64 Dynamic 88 convertible, once I actually get hold of the car. With a bench seat and no armrest, it could be a welcome addition. Does the seat fold forward okay with it in place? I've got a hard plastic armrest (no cupholders) that's probably about the same age as the car. Dad used to put it in his company cars when they didn't have an armrest and it still has some vintage roadmaps from the '60s and '70s inside it. But this solution would look much better and be much more comfortable. If I had the requisite skills and tools, I'd certainly make one myself, but as it is, I'm at the mercy of those who do.

I'd go for an ashtray insert that replaces the tray and thinly sticks out above the closed lip to a single cup holder. Good for a water bottle, maybe.

How did we ever transport drinks back in the day? I don't think we did. There were small indentations in the glove box to set your drinks. But were placed in the trash before departure.

+1. The glove compartment lid was for putting your drinks when stopping at a drive-in. Not good for anything else.

I've never felt a pressing need to have a cup of anything in the car with me while I'm driving.
When I was younger, and I had no A/C, I always kept a canteen of water under the seat, which I could grab at any time. If we were drinking beer, we'd just hold it between our legs, but usually it disappeared pretty fast.

I had a set of these back in the 80s and they worked very well. The flap slips down between the glass and the window seal and it is very stable. Never fell off as far as I can remember.

Yes, but for the love of Heaven, don't slam the door with a full cup of soda in there!

Mmm, yeah, we didn't drink soda while cruising back then, and when we left the vehicle the containers were always empty.

The seat still folds forward with no problems. It does not get in the way at all.

$85 I can see and glad it works for you at $140, however not so much. My issue isn't with you or the thread It's with OPGI's overcharge.

Been looking for the same for my bench Cutlass, but I like Dalilama's idea and will most likely make one. Tough part will be matching the blue interior.

I was considering installing something like that in my 71 98 when I did the radio install recently. I wanted to hide the radio inside a floor console. I found those consoles from OPGI during my search. They come in various styles. I ordered a fabric sample but never ordered one. Here's some other stuff I found:
