Correct type of battery

I just picked up an 84 Hurst Olds and need to get a battery for it. My RPO code refers to UA1 Battery, Hevey Duty.

Does that mean the car originally had a Group 78 or a Group 75 battery?

The other reason for this question is the plastic base where the battery sits appears originally to have four plastic tabs to keep the various battery sizes in place. Mine now has two of the tabs broken off to accommodate the larger 78-battery as the picture shows.

Comments are appreciated. Thanks

Group 78 is heavy duty >> group 75 is standard. IF the group 78 fits I would use that.

You posted this question in another thread, so I'll post this here again. It's my original HD battery from my 85 442 with RPO UA1. It's a 75 series. I think they used 78s in the Chevies. Not sure though. The 78s were a tad wider. If you get the right hold down bracket, the 75 series or 78 series can be used and not float around even with the tabs broken. You can't fix the tabs once they're gone, though. If you're lucky enough and find a Cutlass with a Chevy engine in it, I think they put the batteries over on the "wrong" side and the driver side tabs hopefully remained intact if you wanted to use a 75 battery. So greater chance the tabs wouldn't be broken.

The decals migh look different, and I think it was white with a BLUE top in 1984, with a white body, but they used the same sized 75 series batteries in 84 as they did in 85.

Sorry for the duplication and I appreciate the info which confirmed my suspicions. I am looking into getting a 75 series battery with side posts. Thanks

I can tell you that your battery cables aren't factory, and the positive cable is routed incorrectly. It normally goes along on top of the driver valve cover and down the phenolic tube at the rear of the engine to the the starter. The negative side goes to the stud near #1 spark plug hole.

I appreciate the factory correct info and I will file this information for when I start to detail the car but for now, I need to get the thing running. On that note, in your picture, I am missing the air duct from the radiator to the air cleaner. I have the plastic piece still attached to the rad but the tube and adapter that fits over the snorkel is missing. Is that a part that can be found readily? Thanks
