Fast idle...and rough idle?
VERY common for the intake gaskets to fail--creates a vacuum leak.
'Course, the vacuum plumbing is brittle plastic and seems to shatter at the drop of a hat. Also causes vacuum leaks.
HOW FAST is this "fast idle"?

Bob, is the fast idle after cold start normal? Without more details it sounds to be operating normally. Often, the 3.8l, 3.4l, etc. from the 90s would get improved drive ability after desludging the throttle body and IAC motor. If you haven't done this with plugs and wires recently it may be time for a tuneup.
