CID vs Bore/Stroke
It took GM until the '80s to make a four cylinder engine that could measure up against other makes. Worldwide that is, Ford (Europe and UK) made good engines, Chrysler's European arm also made reasonable ones, of course all the European and Japanese makers had been making them for decades and turned out engines well suited to their cars.
On the other hand, they struggled to make good large engines, not so much the engineering and technology, but production costs for low volume runs.
Thank you for putting me right, Joe, I don't think I was alone in thinking the Iron Duke was half a Pontiac V8. I wonder why it was named after the British general who finally defeated Napoleon in 1815?.
Roger.
