95% rust free?

When a car is adverticed as 95% rust free, does this mean that 5% of the sheet metal is rusted away? That is a lot of sheet metal to replace.
Or is it a way to say that the car has very little rust?

Hmnn....interesting. By that standard, I once owned a 73 Chevy pick-up that was 38% rust free.

It means it has a helluva lot of rust, but most of it not obvious at a glance. Then when you have paid for the car, got it home and found it was falling apart the seller can then say; "Well I told you it had some rust......"
Or am I being too cynical?.

Not at all, Roger. It's a way of seeming to say that it doesn't have much rust, while actually saying that it's rusty as hell.
As 394 says, it means that 5% of the car is completely gone.

Pretty much like "Unfinished Restoration" or "90% complete" means basket case I suppose.

I had a manager years ago who regularly said; "Can you just finish the service on that car, Roger, I've done most of it."
That normally meant he had parked it in the service bay.

Roger.

It means the potential buyer should crawl all over it and find the 5 % before he buys it.
