This was a dealer installed option. Has anyone ever seen or heard of this?
I have a key switch on my front fender.

 

It was a popular device back in the late 60's through the mid-ish 70's.

 

Yes, I used to see that key switch on some junkyard cars, not so much any more though.

 

The only thing left is the key switch. Does anyone know how this was wired in? Was it just to break the power wire to the coil?

 

A friend had a set up like that on his 75 Corvette. It was wired to the jamb switches. If a door or hood opened it would set off a siren. I don't believe it disabled the car in anyway.

 

they also had an aluminum box on the firewall that looked like a tobacco tin with a mercury tilt switch if the car came off level the alarm sounded..like for towing or jaking up and taking wheels..just this morning on facebook i saw a pic of one..weird..

 

It was an alarm, not a kill switch. Usually there were pin switches at the doors, trunk, and hood. There was also an optional tilt sensor that would trigger the alarm if the car was jacket up or bumped.


Don't confuse "dealer installed" with "factory authorized". Dealerships regularly sold add-ons that had nothing to do with the factory. Rustproofing, wax treatments, etc. Anything for a profit.



Personally, I find alarm systems worthless. Show of hands - has anyone here EVER called the police in response to hearing a car alarm go off?

I always wanted to build an anti theft system that connected the coil wire to the door handles.

 

A friend of mine had a 75 Corvette with the same alarm system.
