Good point.

On the flip side though, how many times have you seen an ad that read, "Must go, wife says so."

These women sure are powerful.
It's a question of a decision made in ignorance with the presumption of knowledge vs decisions made in knowledge. Like I say, men and women are different and tend to gravitate to different things. Women in general don't trend to mechanical interests. Certainly there's exceptions but usually that's the case. Personally I defer to my wife's judgements on many things where I don't have as much expertise as she does. The ideal is to be the head of the house without being a tyrant.

Advertising doesn't reflect reality, it tries to influence your perception of reality. There is a reason advertising and pop culture has consistently portrayed men as either incompetent morons or abusive.

Update:

We just returned from a five-hour ordeal at the Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge/Ram dealership. She bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee. It's ok for room, at least it isn't front wheel drive. Surprisingly the front passenger seat is pretty comfortable.

Glad you guys found something. We actually have a Jeep Grand Cherokee as a courtesy car right now since the Kia is in the body shop. The Jeep is better than a Nissan I suppose.

Warm regards to all. Fully support any person who wants a modern car with ABS disc brakes, airbags and all the advancements a lot of us old Oldsmobile geeks don’t like or care about.

The old car thing is _our_ thing. We can’t expect our Wives/Significant Others/Kids to participate. If they want to, that’s a bonus - not a requirement.

In my case, my wife wants a wagon to replace her 104k mile Audi A4 Wagon - which is in great shape. But stupid Audi won’t bring their complete product line here. She doesn’t want an SUV since they handle worse than her A4 wagon from 13 years ago. So 3 months ago, I put a few $$ into the aging A4 to keep it completely reliable on two premises:

1) She likes the car & still trusts it. Heh, heh, I do too! Drives like it’s on rails. Handling is terrific!

2) Our kids (20 & 23) are learning to drive & the A4 wagon is the learning car. If something goes wrong (aka a new driver accident) I’d prefer it happen on a $10k car, than something new. As a Dad, I’m delighted the “learner car” has airbags, good engineering, ABS disk brakes and great seat belts. I suspect the kids will worry less about driving a depreciated car, than something new too, hopefully reducing new-driver stress.

I’d love to get my kids in my antidiluvian ‘66 Olds big cars, but I’ll have to wait. Sensibly, they like smaller, safer, modern cars with ABS disc brakes, fuel injection & airbags. Good on my girls choosing safety.

Meanwhile I’ll be taking my carbureted V8’s for a spin on any opportunity.

Cheers
Chris
