My 72 442 has a Fisher Body Data plate located on the left cowl,above the firewall, the number is ST72 34267LAN494888, this does not match the
VIN # on the title, is the VIN located anywhere else on the car??

 

on the top of dashboard left of the steering wheel near the window. Look at it from outside through the window. It will not match the cowl tag

 

Look at the base of the windshield on the driver's side.




The cowl tag was installed by Fisher Body before the VIN was even assigned to the car, so they won't match. The year, body style code, and assembly plant must be the same as those on the VIN, however. The first four characters of your VIN must start out 3J67... for a Cutlass Supreme convertible (all Cutlass convertibles were Supremes in 1972, even with the 442 option). The fifth character will be the original engine, followed by a 2M in positions six and seven for 1972 and Lansing. The final six are just the sequential serial number of the VIN and are unrelated to the cowl tag.
