Yep, and that is my convertible it was a pretty mint body when I got it yet it was painted three different colors, none of which matched the cowl tag so I am very familiar with how little authenticity you can prove with an Oldsmobile

Great Line............

"Modern examples
There are many examples of objects which might fall prey to Theseus's paradox: buildings and automobiles for example can undergo complete replacement while still maintaining some aspect of their identity. An example is found in the popular UK television show Only Fools and Horses in the episode Heroes and Villains, where road-sweeper Trigger is given a medal by the council for using the same broom for 20 years. He then adds that the broom has had 17 new heads and 14 new handles. When asked how can it be the same broom, Trigger produces a picture of himself and his broom and asks, "What more proof do you need?"

This response has nothing to do with your previous post.

Someone suggested that one could take a woman's engagement ring & swap out the diamond for a fake one & you boldly posted that this was fine so long as she did not know about it & then you LOL.

That post made you look like a total douche. If you do not believe me then show HER what you wrote. I know you posted that as a joke but let's see if SHE thinks it is funny. She wont & no woman would because it is not funny.

Yep, I like "My grandfather's axe." Again I take the stance that few cars are "original" and I would not want one because I'd be afraid to drive it. I understand those who would want it, but not me. I always bring up the Duesenburg frame found on a farm that had a VIN on it and they knew what it was, rebuilt the body and now its worth millions all over again. Many people would be happy with it others look at it as a "ship rebuilt."

My car is a car rebuilt to original specs, I'm pissed the body shop replaced the fenders and threw my old ones out but in the end I can still drive it and enjoy it. I think we are getting lost in the "is it original" and the "forgery" question pop69 originally posted. I'm not all too concerned about repo parts because I guess after 40 years I expect parts to be replaced, what I do get concerned about is there ending up being more W30s out there now then originally. But what that means is documentation becomes more important and in some ways that is a shame considering there are some great W30s whose owners know they are W30s but never found documentation for them - so are they W30s?

Any chance you actually read what you type before you hit the post button? I doubt it becuase it is almost unreadable.

Anyways my bad. Obviously you & your gal have an ideal relationship & are the envy of us all. Good luck with that. Those of us who are a little older & a little wiser know your comment was offside & trying to explain it to you is a waste of time. It's not humor when it shows total disprespect for your partner. You'll figure this out over time.

In my opinion the quality of the car is more important than if it is numbers matching and all original.

A. Numbers matching 69/HO all original. Car had the quarters replaced frame damage that was fixed, fenders patched, trunck floor replaced.

B. All original 69/HO with all original body, clean straight rust free car. 455 block out of a 72 delta, heads of a 67 425 delta, trans out of a 68 buick gs.

What car would you take?
I would take car B

Hmm, I actually would prefer A because I rather have a numbers matching engine. For the right price I wouldn't turn down either (if I had the money). But think, at one point the B car had to be in pretty bad shape itself to replace the engine. What's the difference? One has an engine replaced one has body parts replaced. To me the difference is the engine is more like the soul while the fenders are like clothing.

To me its the body the engines and trans were more marketing than anything special. For the engine and trans to fail on these cars is the norm/spun rod bearings. How many H/O are running the GM original cam and lifters? pistons? valves? The minute you change a part in the engine and trans they are no longer original, unless you use nos parts. If some one wants to build a nos car I say well done. If some one wants to build a clone that can not be told from the original I say well done, just don't pass it off as a original car when selling. To me both cars have value.
If the original numbers matching car was rebuilt from the fire wall and roof I will take the clone. If the nubers matching car had a floor and quarters replaced I will take the clone.

I disagree with your last sentence, I would call any car with original engine/trans etc a numbers matching original I suppose you can argue the extent of original but it sounds like for you to say its original it would need the original oil in the crankcase and original gas in the fuel tank

Not quite.

I just think it is funny how some pepole get stuck on the number matching issue. When pistons, cam, lifters, valves, springs, timing chain, oil pump, gaskets etc are after market. When in fact the only thing original is the block, heads and maybe the crank and rods.Same goes for the body when I build more of the car than GM did there is nothing original about the car except the part numbers. I say there is no right way or wrong way
to build your car when you build it for yourself. For me the body is the most important part of any build.

I think it's funny how people MISUSE the term "numbers matching", like the guy selling a "numbers matching" engine without a car attached to it. Ah, what numbers "match" exactly???

Get as much as you can...why would you sell it for anything less than the max you can get for it? I've never met someone that said "well, I know you'll give me $35K but I'll sell it for $25K just because I'm a good guy". HELL NO! Sucker, if you wanna give me $35K for my car it's yours...

Ask as much as the market will bear...get as much as you can...then buy a Supreme and make a race car out of it

The problem I have with this is when people take advantage of another person and sell them a $25000K car for 35,000K to me the people that do this are first class douches. There was a local guy selling a 69 442 he was asking $8000 for the car it was not worth $1000. The Douche is waiting for a sucker to come along and buy the car.The guy knows the car is a rusted out pile of crap yet he tries to screw over another person. What we have here is a first class-less flipper Douche. I hate greedy people and I don't use the word hate lightly.

You can fight it all you want...you can't change everyone. And really...if someone did pay up the money is it not their own fault for failing to do a little research? Buyer beware is not a new concept...Cheaper Than Dirt is selling 5.56 PMAGs for AR15s for $80 over retail right now. They are the ONLY company that has any in stock...why? Because most gun owners know better. But there are some people that'll pay the price either because of their own ignorance. Can you blame the company for trying to maximize their profits?

This my friend is capitalism, any product is only worth what someone will cut a check for. I respect and support that true American ideal. Remember we are a society that bought pet rocks. With that in mind, anything is possible.

Companies have been maximizing profits buy having there products made off shore with child labour/slave labour in countrys were there is no labour rights. Some factories don't use child labour but workers still have no rights and work long hours for little pay. Is it right that company makes large profits off the back of others? A company has to make profit to stay in business but how much profit and how it is made is somthing I always look into before I spend my money.

That is not capitalism, that is taking advantage of another person that may not be up on the true value of a car.People do this all the time and hide behind buyer beware and capitalism. So you have never been taken advantage of? You have never had shotty workmanship or over paid for a product? So if this ever happens to you you are fine with it because buyer beware it's Capitalism.

You can't rape the willing. I've never seen a car purchase by anyone that did not have a smile on their face. Nor was it done at gunpoint or in a moment of duress, there is always a choice.

We've all at one time or another been through shoddy workmanship or have suffered buyers remorse, whats your point?

I'm not playing into your pitty party. I'd rather have our way of doing business than other societies. Get in the real world, companies do what they do, again because the market and our society let them.

How one gets from forging fake casting numbers or date codes onto an incorrect or reproduced part for the sole purpose of misrepresentation to using reproduced parts designed to appear and function as original so you can use enjoy your car is beyond me as well. But if you wait long enough, the thread may just come full circle (and back on topic).

Okay I get it. Screw over a fellow Oldsmobile fan/car guy because they let me.
Sorry that you think this is off topic but it is the root of forging and fake casting numbers.

Here is a nicely refurbished '68 442 air cleaner assembly.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/68-OLDSMOBIL...463896&vxp=mtr

Oh, wait, except that it is a _Cutlass_ air cleaner.
Not a 442 part.

Ad is riddled with misinformation and outright lies.

That last photo.... is NOT what you are buying, it's a real 442 air cleaner.

And the seller was informed.

That's just outright dishonest.

Talk about your "fake parts"!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
"DESCRIPTION
You are looking at an original Oldsmobile L78 400 oval snorkel air cleaner in fire-red for the 1968 442 automatic models. This assembly is in excellent condition and features the oval single snorkel specific to the 68 models. The inside carb flange mounts to a factory Quadrajet and features the correct drop required for the A-body cars. Includes a new heavy duty air filter, new white striped vacuum lines, new AC Delco oil breather filter with correct hose adapter, period correct wing nut, reproduction GM licensed air cleaner service decal (NJ=68), & a GM licensed 442 metal pie pan (permanently installed). The vacuum actuator and door functions as expected, while the "G" coded stove pipe connects with an excellent rubber grommet. The lid features a reproduction seal and a beautiful reproduction 442 pie pan that is correct for 68 cars - along with an exact factory reproduction 68 specific pie pan retainer. As with all original 40 year-old parts, there are absolute minor surface anomolies - hard to see, but mentioned for clarity. Overall, this assembly will complement any restoration and will enhance your engine compartment.

Based on recent auction house sales (Mecum, Gooding, Barret Jackson, etc...), originality continues to drive the market - replacing an aftermarket open element can only enhance the potential value as well as add to the aesthetic quality of your engine compartment.

INFORMATION
This piece is correct for the 1968 442 automatic models; 4 speed cars did not feature the heated air Thermovac switch - the assembly will still work, but is not correct. Fitment of this assembly is guaranteed for OEM induction intake systems only - be sure the height/alignment is correct prior to bidding.

SHIPPING
Shipped via UPS within one day of payment. International bidders are welcome – please inquire first about postal charges prior to bidding via United States Postal Service International Priority Mail. The assembly will be packaged very carefully in a custom-sized box to ensure no damage during shipment. Typical overseas shipping: Europe/Scandinavia $65-70; Australia/New Zealand $95 or less.

WARRANTY & CUSTOMER SATISFACTION
I offer a full refund (less return shipping) if the part is not received as I have described in the ad. Fitment is guaranteed with factory intake/carb systems - please ask questions prior to bidding - returns for non-fitment will not be honored.

Description of this auction - both text and photos - is exclusive and not for reproduction."

I was looking at the intake from octania He said it would not hold up well to long term use . I would think over years of use washings repairs and heating and cooling cycles it would eventually fail . It would look nice with my set of D heads I have.
