alternator or voltage reg

Went to the local parts store they put my car on a tester said my battery is ok but when i put the lights and ac on and idling at 800 rpm it said low output on the tester.I know that in 72 it had a seperate voltage regulator how do i test if its the alternator or the voltage regulator and what voltage should they read on the wires thanks guys for the input

I can't help on this but I'd do away with the seperate regulator and get one built in the alt. I did and never had a problem again.

remove the alt and take it to your friendly auto parts store. with any luck there will be someone that knows how to bench test it.

Autozone checks Batteries, alternators and voltage regulators for free. If you think it's your VR have it tested. I had mine tested and I think it was the original from 1969, and needless to say it was fried. Bought a new VR from them for about $12 works great. OR if your VR is fried, and you want a new one like they use to put in your car, Fusick sells them for $60. I just couldn't come to terms with spending that much on a VR...at least not for now.

I bought my electronic regulator from a local parts shop last year for 15 bucks. It looks just like the firewall mounted unit, but at 1/3 the weight. Works much better than the mechanical flicker-clicker I had.
