Alt. Belt won't shut up!!!!!

I have a 86 Cutlass, it would squeak for a min or two when I start it up..... Then it broke the powersteering belt, I replaced it, three days later it broke again so I replaced it now the damn car won't stop squilling... So I took the alt. belt off and it stopped when I put it back on it started again.... I used belt dressing but that doesn't help, the belts are tight and not to tight....

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP????????

I would check to see if your pulleys are misaligned

Did you remove the AC compressor and smog pump?
If so, that's your problem.
Those brackets have issues when unbalanced.

There are shims that go behind the brackets. Make sure they are all in the right places.

They are iron rings, between 1/2'' and 5/8'' thick.

You have 2 options now really.
Get a bracketry setup from a 68-76 with AC motor, and swap the whole works on, or find 1968-70 non a/c passenger side alternator mount, that relocates it by the fuel pump.

Eightupman on here should have a set or 2 if you want to PM him.

If you have ALL of the brackets, pump and pullies it may work. but only if the water pump lengths were the same.

Your easiest solution is moving the alternator.

But notice that the ps pump in the picture is a 2 groove.
307's have a single groove. what groove does your ps pump ride on on your wp pulley?

The Alt is good... The noise seems to be coming from the fan pulley- waterpump pulley....

Your pulleys are probably mirror smmoth and shiny. Sand them with coarse emory cloth and see if it helps.

I'm gone try that in a min, soon as I go on lunchbreak... I hope that's it so I don't have to go changing ***** and I did notice my alt belt was shiny when I changed it, but the new belt made the same noise....

You might have a bearing gone somewhere resulting in a little play in one of the pulleys. Once the tension is on it will pull itself off centre and squeal. I had an R34 Skyline (sorry guys...daily driver) that did it. Brand new belts didn't stop it. New bearing did.

You guys have great suggestions, but the problem is the junk 307 parts.

Probably not the water pump. You'd more than likely get a grating noise and maybe a little water if it was the pump. Mine was alternator but if your car has air it could be compressor. My alternator wasn't spinning as fast as it should have been but the belt was. Maybe one of your belts is getting much hotter than the others??

I just fixed my friends 71 ranchero ...

The wire loom goes through a plastic fitting and had separated the wire even though it looked good ...

Autozone or similar will diagnose or even a test light will help ...

I like the gizmo you plug into the lighter socket and has indicator lights on it ...

If the alternator is good and it's spinning then it should be charging unless like Mugzilla says, the wiring has become disconnected or maybe earthed out somewhere. The belt would be slipping big time if that was the cause and you'd see it.
Check your wiring first.

rough up the contact area of the belt with 80gr sandpaper or try a new good quality belt. I've seen what should be a good belt squeal and nothing would shut it up for more than a few minutes.
