air cleaner decals
I have come to that point in working on my Cutlass that I am now looking at the little things. When I bought her a few years ago, I noticed that there were none of what I consider the "normal" decals on the air cleaner. In fact, there are none at all, and no "clean" areas on it that look like an old decal was peeled or scraped off. Because I had so many other things to work on, I did not worry about it at that time.
Does anyone out there have an idea if it was normal that the air cleaner would have no decals on it? And if it should, which ones? This is a '71 Cutlass Supreme w/ the original 350 4bbl, built in Lansing in late July of 1971. The reason that I mention the last part is because I have heard that some cars, depending on the state, at that time had special emissions stickers placed on their air cleaners.

Yeah. I've seen those all before. But my question was more of did some cars leave the assembly line with no decals, or did they all have them, and if so, which ones and what is the correct placement?

I don't know of any Oldsmobiles that left the factory without the decal. I suppose there is a "correct placement" for the decal. It's on top of the air cleaner housing. I don't know the measurements though.

The decal should be radially centered on the top plate, and rotated so that it is read from the front. The specific decal is called by the engine upon which it sits. As far as I know, the only ones not to get decals were the ram air cars in the 64-72 years. The 80s cars don't get logos.

OAI cars still get decals. the 70-72 do not get them on the air cleaner lid or plastic top. but they get the "Keep you GM car GM" decal on the side of the base. Note these decals are year and engine specific. They are not all the NJ code most of the resto places sell.

Thanks. Were there any others on the sides of the air cleaner, or just the "Rocket 350" one on the top?
One last thing, looking at the Fusick site, there are Rocket 350 2V and 4V decals. Does anyone know the difference? They look the same on the site.

depending on whether you had a 2bbl or 4bbl carb, that determines the decal on the lid (and the air cleaner for that matter). off the top of my head I didn't think it mattered as the decals just said rocket 350. or maybe it's the size of the decal. no matter. while fusick is good, they list the NJ code "Keep your GM car GM" decal for 68-77. This is incorrect. I think the NJ code is for 1971 only. 1970 codes all begin with the letter O. For example OO or OI.
It's staggering how much research and effort go into some high level of detail restorations on 1970 models and they screw it up with the NJ code decal on the air cleaner base.
