Air Cleaner Color

Is the correct paint for a 1972 Cutlass Supreme with a 350 4bbl gloss black? Im in the process of reconditioning mine.

Thanks
Will

I'm sure someone can give you the OE color if you want; otherwise, I would just use black engine paint from the parts store. IMHO, it's more semi-gloss than hi gloss.

Yes, I'd also like to find someone who has painted their air cleaner (I have 72 455 with Ram Air) and who has a brand, rattle can color that is in the close approx. black as the original. Original owner painted it with black crinkle finish paint and I removed it. While I liked the black krinkle paint look back in the day, I want mine as close to stock as possible.

Thanks for any good info,

It's about 60% gloss black. Thinly painted. No primer. If you want factory style, don't worry about how it looks when you're done. Toss in a run or two. They sure didn't care that much. It was just a part on a car back then.

Your restoration may vary.

I bought 4 rattle cans of various black paint. 2 cans Rustoleum and 2 of another brand and one is way too shiny and the other three look too dull. Anyone have a brand and a part number for a black that looks good for a 72 455 cutlass with Ram air?

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I'm looking for any info on the correct color red for the '69 H/O air cleaner.

Thanks!

I use Dupli-color engine enamel. They label it as "Low Gloss Black - DE1634" on the cap. It gives a very nice satin black finish.

EDIT: Heres' what it looks like on a WP pulley. With and without flash
