71 cutlass purchase?

http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/cto/2503050998.html

My son just looked at this car and he is serious about buying it within the next day or so. Wanted to get your guys opinion as far as price versus condition. All feedback is appreciated, thank's.

Hard to tell how molested it is under hood and paint is expensive. If body work was done right and it runs well 3500 aint a bad price. Hopefully all trim is included and nice bumpers.

X2, but your son could spend about the same money and get a 442 (or Cutlass convertible) needing just a little more work, with better potential for increase in value.

I do know that the motor is original and is freshly rebuilt, The bumpers need to be rechromed or replaced, outside of that not sure, might look at here tonight.

The car looks in good solid shape, I might want to get him to elaborate on "New mechanical everything"

I would personally prefer a car to be in good, maintained, "original" condition than something that's been heavily modified by someone other than you.

The guy that owned my cutlass wanted it to be a "drag car" and to be honest, he screwed everything up. I've spent most of my time putting the car back to somewhat original state.

Just some food for thought,

Cheers,

Tony

It's a good price if there isn't a bunch of rust on it! Things to check:
See if it has blowby, front end condition (a frame bushings, ball joints etc..), interior condition, tires, operating temp at idle, and oil pressure. Make sure the engine runs smooth w/no smoke out the tailpipe. Drive it to make sure there are no funny noises and the trans shifts smooth. Check all the fluids for any odd smells or discoloration.
Etc, Etc, ETC....
