330 Heads

I've got the high compression 330. Have a guy who has had 2 heads redone at a good price. But He doesn't know anything about them ( inherited them )
Will any 330 heads work on my h.c. 330 work ?
Thanks

The CR is changed with the pistons, not the heads (generally speaking) so the same number on the head (2, 3, 4, stc...) SHOULD net the same CR so long as they haven't been cut or the chambers polished.

He said they're magged and no cracks . Full valve job. New springs and upgraded to positive seals. But the heads were not resurfaced... Do they have to be resurfaced??

Thanks

Not if they're flat.

Watch out for valve jobs - if it was done by a "Chevy guy," they may not have been careful about getting all of them to the same depth.
Bring a straightedge and lay it across the valve stems to be sure they're all the same height.

What year 330? The No. 1 heads used on the 1964 330 motors have the one-year-only shaft mount rocker arms.

I have the high compression motor. Does it matter if these may come from the lower compression...He doesn't know.. Thanks

No, as said the pistons are what changes compression. I would get the .028" head gaskets from Rocket Racing, unless you want lower compression with .040" head gaskets vs the factory .017" shim gaskets.

But you also need to know what year the OTHER heads are that you are thinking of getting. 1964 330 heads won't work on your 67 motor.

I just reread your post, I thought you said #2 heads. The 64 #1 heads needs both shafts and rocker arms complete to be use able. The #2 heads use non adjustable 3/8" rocker arms but easier find parts or go to an adjustable set up. Is the 67 330 a 39 degree motor? I have heard both have been found as well as some with cast cranks. It might require slight clearancing on the heads at the pushrods. I did the same thing, picked up a pair of #6 heads with $1200 worth of parts and work, big intake valves, positive seals and new guides with upgraded springs for $400. Ask him the big numbers on the heads.

#8 heads are not the same, they are 350 heads with big 79cc chambers, your heads are 60 to 64cc.

Ok....So not all olds 350 and 330 parts are interchangeable.....

Thanks!

They're interchangeable, but when you interchange them, you will get different results.

The 67 330 heads are #4 and are very good heads. So what you are being told is if you put the #8 heads on you will lose some of the compression. The #8 heads have larger combustion chambers than the #4 heads that your 330 has stock. If I remember right #4 heads have a 60 cc combustion chamber and #8 is 79 CC. They will physically interchange. Just not what most of us would do.

Good advice...they were so cheap ( inexpensively priced ) that it was very tempting to take the chance...but now that I know....

Don't confuse "interchangeable" with "identical". As noted, the #8 heads will bolt on and the engine will run. The larger chambers will lower CR considerably.

You will lose over a point of compression. The #8 heads also need a lip removed under the exhaust valve. I have measured the #8 heads, on 2 pairs around 77-78CC, slightly better than spec

Couldn't measure valve stem height cause the guy I've been corresponding with is on Ebay.
He said he inherited engine heads and such when He bought a machine shop that closed. there were heads there that people didn't pick up or pay for...This was one of them. Said they were done by the largest head rehauler in California I believe. They look nice for 160 bucks for the pair. If anyone is interested ....Here is the link. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Oldsmobile-S...3D282387164674 Wow! what a link!!! Just type in Olds heads on ebay search. Gold and pretty...

$270 with the shipping.

Last pair of #6 heads I bought, with an unknown recent valve job, was $50.

Last time I tried to give away a pair of #8 heads, in good condition, I failed.

I was curious so I ran numbers through a compression calculator and got ~1.6 point drop, so that HC engine would become a LC engine with maybe 8.5:1 or so.
