307 stalling after a stop

I'm guessing the carb needs rebuilding as it's probably the accelerator pump from what I've been told but wanted to ask here. This is the 307 in my '83. If I pull away from a stop without having my foot down on the gas some to raise the idle, it will start to go and then immediately stall out. I can restart it no problem but it will keep happening. Idle itself is where it should be on tach. I don't have any problems cruising or at speed. Just hoping it's not timing or something like that.

It could be a lot of things, but it's probably not the accel pump, as that would cause stalling when you DO step on the gas.

I would definitely check timing, as well as checking for vacuum leaks.

Shawn,

I agree with Eric.

1. Timing - make sure it is at least at 20. Can go as high as 25 to 27. Make sure you follow the shop manual as to how to do this. If you are not sure, let me know and I will post instructions.

2. Vacuum lines - These engines have a ton of vacuum lines on them and if they have never been changed, there is a good chance that they are cracked. Replace one line at a time, it can be confusing.

3. Check the function of the EGR valve too. Make sure it is opening and closing properly. Sometimes they still work but get carbon buildup on them. Can be cleaned and reinstalled.

As soon as I read the title I thought of the vacuum lines. I had a 403 in my Trans Am that had cracked lines and it ran the same way until I replaced them.

Actually Eric what you described is exactly what happens. If I pull up to a stop, sit there (like at a light), and then at green give it a little gas to go, it will fool you and start to go then immediately fall flat and stall. I have to use my left foot for the brake and hold the gas down some to prevent this. Vacuum hoses are all good, replaced them and a few T fittings that cracked. EGR moves freely.
