1972 olds cutlass s 442

My 455 engine number matches the year, plant & sequential of car.
It does not begin with the number 3 for oldsmobile.
The number stamped on block: 022z103899
I recently obtained the build sheet from the

top of gas tank. It is a Special order Non A/C car with a L75 engine with the w29 package. Could the motor be a manufacturer warranty replacement engine?

Nice to have that style of build sheet. Only GMAD plant build cars got that. If your VIN last 6 digits are there you are golden

Great find. Yes, as stated the W29 confirms 442, and in ‘72 that package could be added to any available engine, even a 350 2 barrel single exhaust - that’s why there are far more 1972 442s today than ever factory produced.

Looks like yours was delivered in California, and the dual gate indicates VIN fifth letter should be a U.

But many on here won’t believe it - until you post pictures of the car😎

Let's see a picture of your 72 442. We love the '72 W29s. Heck we even re-created the original magazine ad with local original paint 1972 W29's.

California build Sheet

I love that these California built cars had the build sheet on top of the gas tank.
They’re typically in pretty good shape unless the trunk is completely rotted out.
The Arlington plant liked to throw them under the carpet in the floorboard area. At least that’s where I found a few of them and they’re usually trash from all the leaky windshields.
You’re very fortunate to have this build sheet and what an awesome car you have.
Does the transmission also match?

My Linden NJ 442 was under the back seat. Except for an inch of missing paper at the top mine is in excellent shape.

Now most of us are curious what are the stamps on the transmission. Does it look like the Top or Bottom of this image?

Engine number

The transmission is a TH 400 but from a 1973 full size oldsmobile.
My engine number does have the 2 for the year and Z for the plant along with the the sequential.
It is my experience to expect the engine number to start with the character 3 for Oldsmobile.
Maybe it is a factory warrantied motor?
And was re stamped. Did Oldsmobile do that? IDK
I did discover the motor was equipped with 30 over forged pistons when I removed it to correct a bad thrust bearing.

Yeah, I have not found a build sheet anywhere in my low mileage 1972 Cutlass 442. It was built in Arlington, Texas. None on the gas tank, none under the carpet and none under the front bucket seats. There is a paper in one of the halves of the rear seat by the seat springs but I did not replace those seat covers so I can't be sure. I may order the rear seat cover from Legendary and install them next winter so I can see what that paper is! I do have the original window sticker so it is verified to be a true original '72 442! See part of window sticker below.

I guess this will serve as verification, but I'd love find a build sheet!
I've found numbers matching for the engine but not seen a number on the TH400 yet. Are there other numbers I should be concerned with?
It is neat that the above owner has a 1972 455 2bbl Cutlass 442! Really neat!
