What seems off? The cable is fixed at both ends and non adjustable.

There's a slotted adjustment hole where the cable connects to the transmission shifter bracket.

On the shift arm....right. I forgot about that one.
But if this is something that has recently started I would then that wouldn't solve the issue. My guess would be a stretched cable, or even a broken sleeve allowing slop in the movement.

The shifter mechanism itself wears and creates a bit of slop in the system. I had to play around with mine for quite a bit in order to get it fully into 1st at one end of travel and Park at the other end. Just keep making small adjustments on the shift arm slot and move it through the gears until it's adjusted right.

I had to use a small file to make the slot longer because it ran out of adjustment in order for the gears to go in. I had Park but no low gear or I had low gear but barely got in Park.

Shifter shows one gear when in fact it's in another. Will check the adjustment on the tranny you speak of.
