Look at the shifter is it correct?
Look at the shifter tunnel hole. Is the tunnel hacked?
Look at the serial number and date code on the trans.
If it's other than a Lansing car look for the build documents.
The steering column and speedometer are often not changed if it was originally a column shift.
Look for spliced wire harnesses and other evidence of hackery.
Does the Z bar bracket look like its been there since 69?
Is all the correct clutch linkage there?
Do the clutch/brake pedals have approximate wear for the miles on the car?

A really well-done resto is difficult to tell.
Documentation and matching serial numbers are decisive.

As well, the VIN derivative should be stamped into the driver side of the transmission housing. That will really tell if that 4-speed transmission was original to the car.
