1962 98 fuel filter

Somewhere along the way someone ran a rubber line from pump to carb and added a clear glass filter.
I'm riding that out and going with a hard line but cannot find a filter with inverted flare that will work.

What are you guys using for filters?

Thanks

You can install an auxiliary fuel filter in the 3/8" hose between the steel line and the fuel pump. Then, run steel line between the fuel pump and the carburetor.

This is the fuel filter I have in my 71 98. You can also find them with a metal case if you want them to be period correct.

Thanks!

Sometimes things are so obvious you just can't see them. Lol
I am replacing that hose also so that makes perfect sense!
I will say I just spent almost an hour at the parts store trying to find the fittings to go back to hard line and some other small bits so I'm a bit cross eyed right now.

The 1962 fuel filter is a glass bowl type with replaceable element. It mounts in a bracket that attaches to the oil filler tube, like so:

You'll see it has steel lines from the pump to filter and filter to carb.

Don't you love fooling with 60 year old stuff that no telling how many people have had their fingers in it?

My guess is either the glass bowl broke or someone couldn't figure out how to open it and change the filter. Those type filters have never been out of production and every garage used to keep the glass bowls in stock.

Yeah luckily they didn't hack too much stuff, that I've seen, but yeah parts are rare if they even exist so the stuff they did throw away, well, it's gone I suppose.

The manual mentions fuel filter but I have yet to see a pic or part number so I was stumped
RA lists the element but not the bowl.

I'm gonna do what olds64 did and add a metal one before the pump.
I'm not doing a restoration just getting her to daily driver status.

It should also be obvious not to pull the fuel hose from the hard line when you have a half tank of fuel either.
I'm walking away for today.😅

I ended up installing a metal can filter in front of the rear wheel where the metal and rubber line from the tank meet.
I made a new steel line from pump to carb, no filter.

Primed the lines with a small electric pump.
Primed carb with a bit of fuel and she fired up and kept on running!

Thanks guys!
