66 olds stalling, dead start(neutral safety switch or ignition)??

on occasion my 66 delta 88 will stall while driving, timing seems to be throwing itself out,you will drive for a bit and check it and its jumped down again.Usually when you come to a stop and start again it has a hesitation spot and stalls, usually starts right up again.Yesterday it stalled after stopping and was totally dead in the water.Head lights and heater worked but ignition wouldn't engage!!Tried pulling the plug off the neutral safety swith and using a jump wire(sometimes this helps) but nothing, sat dead for around 20 mins then turned the key again, ignition engaged and it started then drove home(with the jump wire still attatched)!!!Could this starting issue be caused by the neutral safety switch or possibley ignition issue??The stalling is due to the timing.Antone have any ideas or had similar issues
