1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme starter wiring
Hello everyone, I was wondering if I could get some insight into the wiring on my starter motor. Electrical is not my strongsuit so please forgive me if I ask a stupid question…
I am replacing my AC Delco Remanufactured starter with a Mini starter. I have 2 cables running from the starter, one Purple and one Yellow. I see the purple wire leads into the firewall which would be for the ignition. I am running HEI that I did not install and the Yellow wire is running from the starter into a spliced wire to the HEI distributor. I have read some forums that say you do not need the Yellow wire if running HEI, my question is do I need to hook the yellow wire back up? Is it a ground wire? Previous starter had burn marks at yellow wire if that helps any. Thank you for any input!

The yellow wire is the resistance wire bypass that supplies a full 12v to the old points distributor. You can probably leave it off if the HEI is getting power with the ignition switch turned to start with it disconnected.
Thank you, I appreciate the advice, I will give it a try. My Uncle was the one who did the wiring but unfortunately he passed away so I really have no knowledge of everything on it as far as wiring.
As OldsCutlass said, it is only needed if you are using points. It also only energized when you are engaging the starter. Just tape it up. If you ever decide to go back to points you will have it, but will need to use a diode with your mini starter, since most are missing the R terminal (where the yellow wire is installed on stock starters and points).
