Exclamation Starter solenoid

I am putting in a 1 wire mini starter in my 1971 Supreme and the factory solenoid was 2 wire. Just need to confirm how to correctly wire, new mini starter has 1 wire to engage but factory starter has 2 wire on solenoid. Any help would be appreciated.

oops

If you have HEI you can probably make this work, but if you are running points ignition, you should have the 2nd [bypass] wire on the solenoid.

The one wire, which activates the solenoid, will be the larger one, usually purple. It will have 12V only when the START function is engaged.

The 2nd wire is energized by the solenoid during cranking, and sends full battery voltage up TO the coil only during cranking, bypassing the normal coil feed which provides a reduced voltage via a resistor wire between fuse box/ bulkhead and coil.

I used a Ford starter solenoid for my mini starter. It's a simple hookup.

part numbers

Do you have the part numbers you used for the ford relay and what starter did you use it on. Did this cure the slow starter that is common?

Welcome to the site. There are many reasons why you may have starter issues. What is your current setup?

Lasalle3, Welcome to the site.

Why don't you introduce your self in our newbie section. Tell us what you are working on and a couple of pics and a little more on what is your problem.

The ford solenoid is available at most any part store in the US. You can find them on anything from tractors to boats. Ford used them for years. Pick a year, in fact they often hang right on the rack.

This mod works for a lot of folks. It boils down to having good electrical connections. Good ground and good cables. Just because they "look" good doesn't mean they are, which means you might not need to buy this ford solenoid and modify your system.

Tell us a little more.

Only if you don't have voltage at the Batt terminal when the key is in the start position. A simple relay would work also.
