Why would they do that?

Pulled the original radio and 8 track player today while changing the front speaker. Imagine my surprise when none of the wiring for either unit was hooked up! Cleaned the radio up and reinstalled it but the wiring is very messed up, either cut or missing altogether. I found the yellow wire which should be power for the radio but it had no connector on it, just bare wire. Also found no ground wire. Antenna wire was there but not in the radio.
Since I have a replica car, I don't think I'm going to reinstall the 8 track. My original w-30 didn't have one so I'm not used to it being there anyway. I'll post the unit for sale in the parts for sale forum.
I'm slowly convincing myself I will have to replace the dash harness before everything is working correctly.

Cheaper than not knowing what else is messed up and risking a dash fire

I would just put an end on the yellow wire, find the speaker wires, and plug in the antenna which serves 2 purposes. it works as an antenna and supplies a ground.

I'm going to stick a test light on the yellow wire today to make sure it has power. It is a mess under the dash, wires everywhere. If it is, your suggestion is right on, I hadn't thought about the antenna also working as a ground. Thanks.

If your using an aftermarket then it usually comes with a separate ground. The original radio bolts to chassis ground through the volume control and tuning shaft also.
