I took my 1972 Cutlass out for a drive today and noticed the turn signal flashing speed was varying.

I know when a bulb is out that they flash quicker, but this was a couple of regular speed flashes then a few quick ones then normal then quick... This happened for both directions.

Any thoughts?

First check alternator output, turn on lights and then turn signals, if stays slow may have weak ground or may need battery.

I have had a bad flasher unit do this before.

Yeah, flasher unit was the first thing that occurred to me. They're cheap enough that you could take a flyer on a new one.

X3 on the flasher as the most likely (but not only possible) cause. And while they may be cheap, the are a PITA to replace.

Failing that, start checking grounds.

Thanks for the suggestions. Since the alternator was new last year, I'll try replacing the flasher first.
