power window switch

i'm getting ready to replace the power window terminal block/pigtail in my 70 cutlass supreme convertible drivers door main switch. i've had the panel off last fall and noticed the terminal block was cracked in half hence the reason for replacing.my question is when i'm looking at the fisher body manual 16-7 it shows (as far as I can decipher) that the switch toggle closest to the firewall controls the driver side door window and working backwards the order is right front passenger window then left qtr and right qtr. mine is exactly the opposite with the toggle closest to the armrest operates the drivers window and so on. i'm not questioning the manual but am i understanding it correctly? it doesn't seem like anyone has cut or spliced the wires before

My 1971 CS Supreme convertible driver's door 4-way electric window switch operates in this manner - factory wiring:

L,R,L,R

That is to say:

LF, RF, LR, RR

The toggle furthest from the firewall & most rearward is LF (driver's window), next forward is RF>LR>RR.

The system I put in my 72 hardtop (using an original harness) works like your car. Switch closest to arm rest - driver door, in front of that - passenger door, then driver rear, and finally the forward most switch controls the passenger rear window.

You're confused? I just looked at my 71 Fisher Body Manual. I just installed a new NOS 4-way switch last year (January). Now, I'm confused and the switch I installed was NOS. But, again, this is from the 1971 Fisher Body Manual. WTH!!!

Look carefully at the schematic. It is shown with the wires coming out of the bottom of the plug (shown coming out of the top on the schematic). "Down" is on top, "Up" is below, so when you flip it to correct the up/down positions it is showing the rear contacts as the driver door widow.

Yeah, I got it. But what a way to represent the diagram and the orientation.

Ah buggers...indeed, they are. LMAO
I just came in from a dusty sandy environment attempting to avoid inhalation of some nasty lacquer dust (wearing a mask) - some must have bypassed the mask! Good catch. I'm actually modestly exhausted. Bow and stern in my head, aft & stern on my mind. SNAFU!

Yes, normally I would say it was drawn like that to allow easy to follow lines back to the main schematic, but there is plenty of room there to draw it with the wires coming out toward the bottom of the page. Odd.

Why would anyone use nautical terms to describe the orientation of a power window switch?
