HEI Wiring

Hello,

Quick and maybe a question that has been answered before. I just got an HEI ignitionin for my 72 convertible cutlass. I know that with the HEI the yellow wire to the starter is not used and should be capped but my question is with the single red power wire where does that get ran to? It is my understandig that the factory wont work due to resistence so where do you run the single red power wire for the HEI coil? Since it is a 10" wire does it plug into the relay by the distributor and if so which one do you unplug?

Thanks Guys as always it is appreciated

I ran a wire from the windshield wiper motor. It's close and 12 volts hot with the ignition on. I've heard others have replaced the original resistor wire from the fusebox with a non-resistor.

Thanks for the idea. So as long as it's atleat 12 volts it does not matter where it it hooked up to? If thats the case to leave the harness alone what about a longer power wire to the alternator or the battery directly? What got me wondering is this from the instructions

"Reconnect the wire leading from the ignition switch to the distributor, and plug the pickup lead connector into the new distributor cap".

So does it have to be hooked up to the ignition switch?

Here is a terminal in the fuse box labeled IGN. it's a switched 12 volt power supply(it comes on when the ign key is cycled on), most folks use that terminal.

I agree with Chrish, use the spade lug, terminal on the fuse box (inside the car). That's how my 70 Chevy pickup is hooked up.

Hooking to the Altern. or battery will let the car run, but no way to shut the engine off. Short of un hooking the wire.

Thanks for th tips. So now that I know the starter yellow wire is not needed and needs to be capped and the power for the HEI comes from the IGN on the fuse box what do you do with the wires from the stock externanal coil since they are no longer needed or are they needed?

Thanks
