HEI Wiring

Hey,

No I didn't get pictures or draw a diagram. And yes, I am a dumbass for not doing so. Lesson learned. But the Delco HEI has 2 wires going to the BAT connector. One is the gray wire from the firewall that's labeled "resistor, do not cut" which is below the large purple wire in the photo and the other yellow wire with the round connector on the end that connected somewhere, I just can't remeber where. From what I've seen in searching this issue, there should only be one wire for 12V and the resistor wire isn't used. There are several other loose wires throughout the engine compartment (and under the dash), one of which (orange stripe) can be seen in the top of the photo. But it wasn't hooked up before so I'll figure it out later. The last guy who rigged this wiring up funked it up good, but the car was running ok before I tore it down.

Thanks Rob

The yellow wire would have been 12V feed from the starter to the OEM coil. The gray wire is the one that goes to the fuse panel that supplied a regulated feed to the coil when running. usually you would replace the resisitor wire with a 12awg wire.

Some people have been using the resistor wire to trigger a relay to supply the HEI coil.

Ok, so the way it appears is that the yellow wire was connected to the starter and both it and the gray wire were connected to the HEI? That's what make's this wiring setup so screwy the way it was done like that. So I can now use a single 12awg going to the fuse block ignition or accessory connections and nothing is required going to the starter?
Thanks, Rob

The Black/Orange wire is for the trans kickdown if you have a TH400.

correct. you need 1 wire to power the HEI, from an ignition terminal that is hot in "start" and "run" only. fused at 10 or 15 amps would be best.

Ok Bill, Thanks. I'll wire this up correctly now so I don't burn up all the work and $$ I've just put into it. Appreciate the advice guys.
