1968 442 Electrical help

Hi there, i just began working on the electrical and was wondering if anyone can help me out with some questions I had.
The volts meter had its ground going all the way to the battery. Is this necessary?
Are there any places where i can get a new radio and speakers? They dont have to be from the 60s but i want them to look original.
Attached is a picture of what I believe to be the ash tray lamp but im not sure. Can anyone confirm? Its connected to the same wire as the lights in the clock.

Thanks for the help!!!

Did you look for a 1968 wiring diagram in this Electrical Subforum? 👌

Purchase a used paperback OEM original Oldsmobile 1968 Chassis Service Manual and it will have an original color wiring diagram, as well. Best bet is to have the CSM - it’s your bible for this car.

Hopefully you found the 1968 wiring diagrams in electrical forum. Yes, that bulb and ensuing wire is the ashtray lamp/holder.
NOTE: When your CSM arrives (hopefully you purchased an original OEM used paperback 1968 GM Oldsmobile CSM) the 4-4-2 model wiring diagram is likely to be B&W (not color)...not to worry. I believe the only departure from the color wiring diagram is the ALT area. Get yourself a decent magnifying glass to save your eyes when reading the wiring diagram. A simple circuit tester is a valuable tool to diagnose electrical wiring.

The Classic Aiutosound units are really nice. Check them out.
Most 60s cars had ammeters as opposed to voltmeters, and they go all the way to the battery.

All instrument panel lighting is connected to that same circuit with the grey wire. Yes, that is the ash tray lamp. The angle bracket screws to the backside of the instrument panel.
