Our '72 Delta 88, Adventure and update

Hey guys,

I posted in the new member section late last year when we got our Delta 88 to Alaska. long story short the car has been in the family for the last 24 years or so and only driven about 4-500 miles a year during that time. Now that the car is here it can be enjoyed and driven MUCH more and already has.

This year when i got the car out of its first winter storage in AK we had to replace the coil and turn signal switch. We had our mechanic check it out and change all the fluids. with a fresh rebuild on the transmission right after it was shipped up it was ready to hit the road.

The car had just rolled 88k miles when it arrived. In the last few weeks i have been racking the miles on the car since the weather has been AMAZING!! nice warm spring, top down weather is hopefully a great sign of the summer to come.

I'll share the photos from early April when i got the car out to the most current. please enjoy!

Thanks guys! It has been a blast. I only got to see, ride in and drive this car every 2-3 years when i went back to North Dakota with my grandparents. Now that its sitting in my garage and i can take it anytime its like a kid in a candy store. I've been taking it to work just about every day.

By the end of the month the car will be a "True Alaskan" so to speak when the North Dakota tags run out and we're going to get an AK title and plates. I plan to get personal plates "72 Olds" soon there after.

Only bad part of this is with 3 other classic cars i have been spending all my free time putting miles on the Olds instead of the '69 cougar, '76 Vette or '56 Bel-Air convertible. Luckily they are not sitting stale as my dad and grandfather drive the others but i'm feeling a bit guilty.

Well, today the Olds became an Alaska car. New AK Title and plates. Kinda wish we could have kept the ND plates but alas it was not in the cards.

Awesome line of automobiles (particularly the Oldsmobile, of course), and the scenery is just AWESOME! My wife's twin sister and her boy friend are "up there" as we speak, and I'm sure we will spend about two days when they get back looking at his pictures!!!!!! Glad you, and your Family, are able to enjoy each of the rides!!!

Well i had to make a quick work trip to Seattle last week and missed out on some good days with the Olds, if you want to call them good. We have some very large wild fires going on and the smoke has been crazy! luckily it has subsided and we have got some much needed rain. That said the Olds is in the garage nice and safe with the top already down waiting for a nice day.

On Monday there was a Memorial day car show. The interesting thing about car shows in AK is you have the same cars you've seen for 20+ years, then you get to see what everyone has bought and shipped up here over the fall/spring so it gives a nice variety. my grandpa finally got his '56 Bel-Air out of the body shop after some guy decided to hit him. We got to park next to each other and it made for an awesome day. The Olds got a lot of looks, questions and photos taken of it...i was pleasantly surprised!

Here are some photos from the show, other random cars. Then at the end of the day i got some photos of both the '56 and the Olds together at grandmas house.

Thank you!

Weather went slightly sour for most of june, today was the first decent day in awhile. I took the car out to Wasilla,AK to see some friends. I need to remember sunblock when i drive with the top down that long!

Just rolled 90,500 miles today.

Hey guys, time for an update!

About 3 weeks ago we sold my Grandpas daily driver '04 F-150 (long story) now trying to find him a new truck is taking longer then expected. In the mean time he has been daily driving the Olds. Over the 4th of July we took it out camping about 100 miles out of town, it was even included in the very small parade they had going on. The car ran great and had no issues for my grandparents on the way there or back..even got pretty good MPG's also!

this last week two issues came up, it overheated so we replaced the thermostat..it looked old i dont know if it was original but it had stuck shut..luckily that happened in town! Also we noticed a small drip of gas from the fuel pump every time you shut the car off, so Friday night i also replaced the fuel pump. The air filter was horrible also so it was replaced..she should be all good to go now, even rolled over 91,000 miles on the test drive after i did the fuel pump.

Yesterday we cleaned under the hood..came out pretty good for not having been done in at least 20 years!

Looks great, but now the engine desperately screams for one of these on the air cleaner

They're available from several vendors for not much money, and one would really dress things up.

That sticker would really look great, I'll have to pick one up!

So the weather is turning here slowly into fall conditions. It won't be long and the Olds will be back in storage for another winter. Still trying to get as much driving as i can with her..almost 3,000 miles so far this summer.

here's a few recent photos.

Well i figured i should update. The car ended up going into storage in November. We had basically no winter here, hardly any snow and much above normal temps.

This meant an early spring! so Tuesday night i went ahead and pulled the Olds out of storage. Still only in the 40s during the day so no top down driving but i have put a few miles on her this week.

Looking forward to another summer with the car

Well last fall we replaced the radiator with a brand new unit that had to be special ordered of course. I noticed right when i put the car up last fall it had an antifreeze leak. I thought it was the lower hose clamp. Fast forward to this spring, I figure out that the brand new radiator has leaks! had to pull it and send it out for repair locally. Shop charged us zero, considering they could not utilize the manufacturer warranty due to shipping it was very nice of them.

Shes purring along perfectly now, no more leaks!

Update time!

The car is running great! Been driving it for a few weeks when I can. I put a new classic style stereo in this spring with AUX input, one of the best things ever!

94,5xx miles as of today, here's a few pics from today.

If you want to sell the original radio, I am interested. If you cut off any plugs, I am interested in buying those, too.

The radio that was in the car was not original, it was apparently a higher end or later model 4 channel am/fm. The wiring somebody did many years ago was not pretty so I cleaned that all up. It was about a 3 hour install taking my time and fixing a few other little things when I had the dash apart.

I plan to keep the old radio in the garage just in case.

Nice Delta. My grandparents had a lime green '72 convertible with the same color interior and a 455 with a 2bbl carb under the hood. My grandfather always grumbled about changing it to a 4bbl, but as far as I know, that never happened. It quietly disappeared after my grandmother died in 1993. I guess my uncle sold it but I don't know for sure. You did a nice job installing the radio. Did you re-using the original *****? It's hard to tell from the photo. I'm going to have to look into something along those lines when my '64 arrives. It has a non-functional AM radio. I'd love to be able to listen to tunes, but I definitely don't want to butcher the thing up to do it.

I'm new to this thread and really liked the car and color. Then half way through I saw the interior was green and now I'm in love. Really neat color combo, that car is a dreamboat.

Delta and Alaska

I owned a 71 Delta 88 coupe and parked it for 7 weeks in 1976 while we took a family road trip to Alaska from New Orleans. I found out upon returning that my older brother assumed it was his while I was away and I needed a valve job after that. Loved your pictures of both, they brought back a lot of memories!

Figured you guys would enjoy an update and an old photo. Found a picture from 1992 or so when the car was 100% factory. Otherwise we've been putting miles on it. Sitting at 95,7xx miles after filling up yesterday.

We had the last big car show and perfect weather for it! Sunny and 75 can't ask for better.

Those pictures are amazing with the Alaskan vistas in the background. It must truly be a joy to drive your Olds in such a beautiful area.
