1954 2 Barrel to 4 ...

  • Getting ready to rebuild original 54 motor due to stuck #3 pistion
  • ...everything (else) in very good original condition
  • but...thinking of going from 2 Barrel carb to 4 Barrel
  • and....evidently need a 4 Barrel intake ... & carb
  • that are specific for 1954...
  • 1) is that true?
  • and 2) where do you find a 54 4 Barell intake?
  • or...is going to a 4 barrel NOT worth the effort?

Generally, I'd say upgrading to a 4 barrel carburetor would be an excellent performance enhancement. The only caveat is that you want to make sure you have the proper throttle valve linkage on the side of the carburetor going to the transmission. This is MANDATORY, meaning you won't be able to buy a Holley carburetor from Summit and install it. You'll have to find an intake manifold, carburetor and throttle valve from a 4 barrel parts car. Good luck. 👍

I've got an original carb, but not the intake. I'm located in Oregon. Let me know if you'd like to see pictures of it and if you're interested send me your zip code so I could get shipping costs for a total price to your door.

The 54 and 55 manifolds will interchange and I expect the 56 will too. If John does not have a batwing air cleaner, I have one. Just let me know.

I am pretty sure the 54 and 55 interchange. The 56 could have some differences. Charlie Jones is the resident expert on the first generation V-8's (and lots of other stuff). Certainly it is possible I could be completely wrong. Be sure before you pay to ship one of these heavy rascals across the country.

I have been in decode casting number mode for 2 weeks now! So yes, wait for Charlie or Tedd to chime in, but I think a '56 will fit, but the casting # is different, maybe from the hot air choke tube or something. '54 & '55 are interchangeable for sure.

Just found this about '56 from Charlie, exhaust crossover https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...-324-a-163319/
