Pattern check

This is my first time rebuilding a differential and I’m a bit unsure of the pattern I’ve got. Backlash is between .008 and .009 and I’ve got .030 shims under the pinion bearing, how does my pattern look?

What is the rear make ?
8.2 8.5 7.5 12 bolt?
It appears to be a runner.
If it feels nice and smooth turning and you have the pinion preload correct and the carrier is TIGHT in the case (meaning you have to pry it out with a crow/j bar to remove from the case ---you are on the right path.
Mix a couple squirts of oil on the ring and send a few more pics.

what do you mean by a runner? It is smooth and indeed is tight enough that I need a pry bar to remove the carrier.

Here’s a few more pics with more paint and some
oil. I know it’s a bit much to paint the whole gear but it was kind of on every tooth anyway so I figured why not.

ok now the first run just do a around the block no more than 5min. run and check for leaks.
1/2 hour shut down.
Then run the gear 10 mins. vary speed no more than 50 mph no big monster climbing of hills. and if you have stick shift NO NO transmission gear slowing down....use your breaks only ...no down shifting...creates even more heat.
get back park for an hour...
do about 4 ot 5 of those 10 min runs with hour shut down and if you have no noise you should be good to pound on it.
I do not think your car is a tower BUT no towing till 500 miles...lol.
Good luck.

painting all the gears show if you have any run out in the ring to pinion...It is ok. YOU ARE good in my book. I hate when people only paint 4 -5 teeth...NOT enough to get a good enough idea that the gear is not defective in anyway.
I have a 3.36 gear when YUKON first came out with them and one ring tooth was cut twice and NEVER patterned i went around and around and around...lol. yellow compound never came off the ONE TOOTH... just goes to show.

you can also push a rag into the housing to wedge against the ring edge and turn the pinion yoke to recreate move heavy drag to see the pattern better too.

Jim thank you so much! I will absolutely heed your advice about breaking the new gears in!
