did search, no luck.

Need to replace an axle seal on RH side.

I have a 8.5 bolt in axle rear end out of a 71-72 Olds.

I've replaced C-clip axles before.

How do I get a 'bolt in' out?

I see the four bolts on the square flange at the brake backing plate.

What do I have to do in the 'pumpkin' to get the axle out?

I assume the seal is fairly straight forward after I get the axle out, but let me know if any gremlins to look out for in THAT.

The beauty of the bolt-in axle is that you don't need to touch the pumpkin. Remove the brake drum. Remove the four bolts and nuts. Reinstall the brake drum on the flange inside out (open end of the drum towards you). Thread three of the lug nuts onto the studs with the flat side towards the drum. Thread them on just enough to get full thread engagement. Now use the drum like a slide hammer and the axle shaft will come out.

After I posted, I had found some other sites that had some instructions, but you're the first with the home configured inertia hammer concept!!!

Question:

Is there a problem with the seal/bearing configuration? i.e. is the bearing pressed on the axle 'behind' the seal? am I going to have to have a bearing pressed off and then back on, just to change out a leaking axle seal? or is the bearing 'outside' of the seal?

If I don't hear back from you before I try to pull it, I guess I'll find out the hard way, but when I pulled the drum (thinking I had a wheel cylinder leaking), I discovered the rear shoes were paper thin anyway, so I'll go ahead and do a rear brake job on it while it is apart anyway.

The seal is in the rear end housing the bearing is outside the seal
