What are my options to replace 2.56 gear?

We think we have a "O" rearend and positive theres a 2.56 in it. What other gear options do I have without changing anything else. I heard of 2, 3, and 4 series carriers...what do I have...2? This is in a 67 chevelle with a bbc and a 4spd. We got to drag clutch in 1st to get it going but when it does its a mph monster. So what gears can i just pop in there and how difficult is it to gets those gears?

Save yourself some grief and money and just go buy a whole drum-to-drum axle unit with the gear ratio in it that you want -- Like a 3:55 posi -- etc. 12-bolt chevelle rears all restored with rebuilt gear and posi units usually run anywhere from 900-1500$.
check with Brian (507 Olds) on hear. He can probably fix you up. Otherwise shop around. Some good ones turn up on craigslist from time to time as well as on the "team Chevelle" website. Check it out.

Thanks for the reply, Ive been waiting and watching for someone to give me some info. I really wanted to just change my 2.56 to whatever else I can without changing carrier or buying a whole other rear end. What other gears can I just fit in?

From what I've learned on here, I think you have a 2 series carrier and can go up to a 2.78 ratio.

Really? Thats too bad. That wont be a big enough difference for me to bother and change it. I guess I would have to change carrier and gears. You know if that possible and what it would roughly cost me?

You can swap in the 2.78, and go to a shorter tire.

Just a thought.

Thanks but it looks like I might have to change the carrier(if thats possible) to make a bigger jump than just a 2.78 or swap the whole rear end if cheap enough...anyone looking for a 12 bolt(actual 10 bolt) "O" rear end with 2.56 posi?

For what you will spend on just the parts to rebuild your O-axle,I can build you a complete 8.5" 10-bolt posi, with any ratio, all new parts inside, and it will handle your BBC just fine.$1,000.00 plus the freight.
