Posi problem, anyone know how to fix posi rear ends

My limited slip is slipping, when I put the car on the rack the tires will spin opposite directions but if I keep spinning them they eventually both lock up and go the same direction. Anyone know whats wrong and what I could do to fix this. If so were should I get parts. This car is a 1969 Cutlass

Sounds like your clutch plates are worn. Since these plates must slip on turns, they do wear out. If you have the plate-style unit, they can be replaced. If you have the cone-style unit they cannot and the whole differential housing must be replaced.

Is there any way to tell what style I have without taking it apart? Thanks for the info.

If it's the original rear (12 bolt cover type O) then it has clutches and can be rebuilt.

*But* a cone posi can be tweeked to significantly extend the life of a street-used unit.

Which should seriously be considered if one has a 4-pinion 8.2 10-bolt unit ('66-'67).
