That didn't seem like every two years to me...
Look above that and it says "full - 2004". The only way you fill these is by emptying them first, unless that was just his way of verifying the level was good by sticking his pinky into the bung and check for fluid?

As I suggested, the carrier and axles may have been swapped. That's why I asked if the axle shafts had holes to undo the 4 securing bolts.

Do you have any pics that show the inside of the carrier with the pin and spyder gears showing better?

Take wide angle picture and post it . Or pull the yoke and count the spline.

Problem is the car is all back together right now if I understood from earlier. Pics would have been nice whilst it was apart. Now the next easiest way is to check those axle shafts. C clip types will not have those axle flange holes.

8.5 olds guaranteed. Pull the yoke and count the spline. I learn a lot from Jim just talking to him on the phone.

I thought these were only found in 8.2's.
No one has responded to those questions yet...

My audio guy is finishing a repair right now.

it is a 8.5 10 bolt o type axle...3.42 gear just by the count method...

I don't remember doing that and never meant to say that.
I did post a couple times that I DO have c clips.

Either way, I have c clips and the pinion nut specs of the 8.2.

Can any one tell us if the 8.5 had c clips?
Can an 8.5 have the shorter pinion nut that I have?

I see here in the new Summit catalog,
the 8.5 has c clips. And comes with 28 or 30 spline.

My confusion continues....
I'll Just have my mechanic pull the wheel and count the teeth.
Then I going to find the casting number Allan showed me.
Then I'm likely going to contact Jim.

My extremely competent Mechanic identified that my rear end does have c clips. No I did not see them. But it's irrelevant now as I see both the 8.2 and 8 .5 can have c clips

Sorry I do not understand this question if this is a continuation of something you posted earlier please put it altogether at once for me:
because it's like the more we discuss this the more confused I'm getting.
The more people I talk to the more opinions vary or straight up contradict one another....

I ended up having to give my mechanic $280 yesterday and I still don't know what rear end is in my car

What you are looking at is spline count for the axles.
Disconnect the driveshaft, pull the yoke out and count the splines. 30 splines 8.5 guaranteed.

I firmly believe that you have 8.5 BOP rear end with bolt in axles. Those little square bumps are only on BOP bolt in axles.

$280 to basically change the fluid and gasket and take a peek?? If so you need a new mechanic my friend. I pay $60-$80 for that.

If I wasn't out of the country I would help you, to the extent of my limited knowledge. FYI I paid $350 to get my rear end hot tanked, put it all new bearings,seals, posi and gears. That was for labor, Jim supplied the parts. Your competent mechanic is a rip off.

rear end

The rear end is a 10 bolt 8.5 Corporate gm

It has BOLT IN AXLES
The pictures you showed on this site are all 1o bolt 8.5. Carrier caps with the diamond casting and arrows high on passenger cap and low pointing out on the driver side cap. Then there is the casting BUMPS on the cast collar where the tube presses into the center casting on each side. The Pinion nut will be 1 1/4 socket
The yoke will use 4 bolts and 2 straps.
The rear cover is correct for the OLDS rears all the way to 1971 - 1976

THAT IS NOT A 10 bolt 8.2 c-clip CHEVY rear.

Done.
