Axle Identification

I need help ID’ing an axleshaft out of my 442. The rearend was replaced a few years ago, so not original to my 442.
Here’s a pic
The bearing is what’s confusing, my auto parts store says it’s an A10 bearing, which I’ve read is VC only? I’m replacing this axle (bent) with another one, and they tell me it has a smaller O.D., and takes the A9 bearing..

I had a similar issue when I did bearings on my 72. One side looked like yours, the other was still stock. From the information I was given by the other knowledgeable folks here, the bearing had been replaced, but not with an OEM style bearing. I'd suggest that's the same as your situation.

They both should be square cut bearings

This was the axle taken from the RH side

This is the axle taken from the LH side

The thick retainer is a giveaway that it's an aftermarket bearing.

I haven't seen a bearing like that before - it looks to me as if the race is missing due to the tapered rollers being exposed.

The race is in the axle tube.
So, wondering if the corporate and VC rearend have different axle tube I.D.’s where the bearing fits?

axle shaft ID

Lokks all norm al to me.
The axle shaft diameter will be in the 1.378 - 1.381 range just in front of the retaining wedding ring ... So if it is this size the correct axle bearing is a set( timkin or A9 anything else which I advise NOT to use.
The seal will be a 712146 TIMKIN again ... you can try another brand but it will most likely measure wrong.

A10 bearings were only used on WAGONS in the A-body GM the a10 was a FULL size car bolt in axle bearing in the 1971-1976 era cars. Plus they measured 1.6 axle size or ID bearing.

Fit you need the bearings or the axle shaft we have them. Jim

Ok, the parts store took a look at the tapered bearing on my original axle, and said “it’s a A10 bearing” wrong! I just removed the race, and it’s marked A9...the replacement axle is in, BTW, the replacement bearing was same size as the race, should be good to go
