'73 GS driveshaft fit '68 Cutlass
Hey Guys,
I just bought a Turbo 400 out of a 1973 Buick GS with the original driveline. Does anyone know if the driveline will fit a 1968 Cutlass without modifications?
Thanks, Mike

A 70 cutlass would have a type o rear end, and a 73 GS would have the 8.5
I doubt it will work for you, because of the different rear end castings and yokes. It will be just close enough to pi$$ you off probably.
Definitely worth a try though, and you may just get away if you use the right yoke and u joint combo.

Yeah, not what I wanted to hear but what I was expecting. I'll crawl under the car this weekend and see how it matches up with the Olds rear and take it from there. Thanks for the replies.

It may work! Make sure you have enough freeplay on the front yoke and the drive shaft is not to long or short. Then on the rear measure your current U-joint vs the one from the Buick If they are the same diameter and width, just plug it in. If not there are alot of adaptor U-joints out there to match one up.
Give it try, what have you got to lose!

rear and tranny combo
Just because the cars have the same wheel base does not mean the engine will be in the same location over that wheel base.
As 1973 A-body cars were TOTALLY redesign so I would doubt they gave the same length in driviline placement in that car. BUT you never know.
IF they were the same the drive shaft fir the GS would be TOO SHORT for you to use in the 1970 Cutlass. because of the rear end 10 bolt 8.5 having a longer pinion shaft than the 12 bolt 'O' type or any other 10 bolt GM had.
Chopping and shortening the driveshaft is not as bad as having to ADD on as in this case.
IF your getting a great deal I would say get it and the 400TH yoke used is worth 50.00 buck easy and just go to any scrap yard and get the correct length from another vehicle ...worse case you get one too long and you have to shorten it. ANY GM drive shaft from a s-10, astro van, camaro ...ANY GM car will do the job as there are many u-joints that will work the combo off the shelf at your auto parts store.
