Does anybody do ANY research on where things go before attempting a resto ? See pics. Here's the link too - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1971-...item27cf1e9863

You only look at one side of the car at a time.

Well you could start a list of what's wrong, but the seller doesn't claim the car is a restoration - just that the PO had bodywork done before; then lists what he's done to it. The obvious flaws and repairs needed would be bargaining tools for the buyer. No way that car is going to be in the high retail category because you don't stand 20 feet away and look at the interior. I do believe the seller is not trying to hide anything based on the pics though.

Some proof reading of the ad reveals some wording problems too, but they are easy to work around.

Can't see where he claims to have done a "resto"?

Looks like a decent 40yr old car with an OK paintjob. There is some mudwork in the driver's 1/4. Not sure where else, but that is the most obvious from a glance.

I wasn't talking about the seller in particular. I'm talking about the person that decided where to apply the body side and chrome trims. It looks hideous.

The stock stainless trim is in the right place for a 70-71 Supreme (except for the missing fender piece).

The pieces up higher on the sides are aftermarket stick-on vinyl side protection trim - I've seen that on numerous 70-71 Supremes, even in really old pics from when the cars were fairly new. The lower side stainless trim offers no protection for the middle and upper half of the side body panels, so it's pretty likely that the trim was stuck on to that car many years ago, more for dent protection than for whether it was correct.

I agree it isn't very attractive, but it's not like they put the factory pieces in the wrong place.

those vinyl door gaurds were real popular in the late 70s early 80s. I remember everyone buying them to help prevent door dings. Must admit they do look hideous now but back then they were the "in" thing

Man, I remember that stuff sold at auto stores in a "kit". Came in a roll with finished end pieces for like 20 bucks. It was a door ding protector that looked worse than a few dings.

What I remember is seeing owner installs where it was angular or most common, looked like a snake trail, all wiggly!! Buy hey, it came in burgundy for the classy man.

Well the good thing about that stuff is you can peel it off carefully and just polish the paint underneath. Better than that aluminum rail with vinyl inserts that you'd have to drill holes for riveting.

Spray some WD40 on it, that will help get it off (seriously it works)
I was partial to the stainless door edge guards, not that chrome plastic crap

I think the 2 differant mirrors would drive me nuts looking at. I would have to change that.
