What is this? (behind back seat)
I give up. What is the silver oblong canister behind the rear seat. It looks to be a pretty well engineered and sealed piece, so I'm figuring it's important.

yea what is it , lol , I found the same thing on my 72 CS when installing new seats...it looked as though lines from the gas tank went to that thing...looked to me to be some kind of emission vapor unit or something like that since my car was built in CA , with all their emission control crap...looks like your car was the same color as mine was. Halloween Orange lol

Vapor separator standpipe for the fuel tank. It collects fuel vapors off the tank and condenses them back to liquid fuel, which then returns to the tank.
Though I gotta say I've never heard of one on a 68 unless it might have been a California emissions thing. Most 70 and all 71-later had them until underhood vapor canisters became common.

The vapors would ignite and the car and it's occupants would be blowed up good.
I never understood the reasoning behind bringing a fuel system component into the passenger compartment, but what do I know.
It's all sealed but what if it did come loose or got a hole in it somehow?
My Vista doesn't have one so I don't really care.
Those canisters look like big whiskey flasks.

Hmmm, I guess converting it to an ashtray is out of the question....
I'll be dropping the tank to convert to efi anyway, so what ever is in there will be gone soon.
OMG, I just found the diagram in my AIM. What a cluster f@&$.......

remember when pick-up trucks had fuel tank behind the seat, and fill neck next to drivers door.you go to gas station to fill up and both you and service station attendant would light a smoke and have a chat while tank was being filled!

Oh, I remember the truck fillers next to the driver's door, it's the smoking part that's throwing me off.

I was wondering what that thing was as well. I saw it when the rear seat came out, and I had no idea what it was.
So does that replace the black, round charcoal canister under the hood on newer cars?
