Starter wire routing with headers

I have a 71 Cutlass with 455/Auto. Got it running and managed to have room for factory starter with Flowtech headers (for time being - Powermaster will be swapped in once we get to driving semi-regularly).

I have the Power cable and Switch wire strapped to oil dipstick (which is securely fastened to a header bolt). They both have inline fuses, but just seeing if anyone else has better routing ideas. I’m not real happy with it.

I like these quick connect starter wiring harnesses that clip onto the solenoid, but apparently they are out of stock everywhere.

Pontiac used various forms of tubes through the muscle car era. Here's an example: https://s22.photobucket.com/user/Mes...yr2uy.jpg.html

Maybe you could fabricate something...

We used the later style starter shield/bracket on my buddy's W31. It keeps the wires nicely tucked in & protected. We have flo-tech long tube headers on it & we did have to trim the front of the shield a bit to clear the headers. We're still using the stock tube on the frame for the bat. cable routing.

Awesome. That will help a lot. Looks good.

Who has the starter shield, OPGI?

Most of the parts sellers have it. Fusick's part # is SBS645 for $32. It's a copy of the later factory starter brace that Olds started using in the mid '70s. I try to buy most of my "stuff" from Fusick, they're real Olds guys! The Parts Place seems to have better prices on some parts but I've had some problems with them over the quality of their chineseium parts!!! Fusick produces( I should say has the parts produced) quite a bit of the Olds stuff that everyone sells. I always found OPGI & Year One to be quite expensive!

starter wiring

1971 cutlass 455 or 350 with headers;

As we know headers are a pain in the a__ we are dealing with lack of space and heat, heat being the big factor. Let's get started, 1968-1974 Olds Cutlass V8 Std or auto Trans Battery Cable Tube & Bracket ( motor city, fusick). Attach tube to the rear of the head, run your battery cable and solenoid wire up through. Then run parallel with the firewall under the wiper motor and master cylinder. Turn and follow the inner fender catching existing wire loom to battery. You will have to fabricate your own wires and battery cable. Do a dry run with scrap wire, measuring and marking as you go. I would begin at starter. You can have the positive cable made up on line or neighborhood old school auto parts store. Starter heat shield sold by (parts place). As I said heat is the big factor, there are insulated wire looms in bulk “online” in different diameters.

Other factors:
Move the brake Proportioning Valve.
Fabricate a shield for other motor mount.

Insulate transmission lines

Good luck keep us posted! Oldsmobilejim
