new starter options with headers

I have my hedman headers ready to install this spring in my 350, I would like to install a new starter prior to installing the headers, I have seen the mini starters, anyone installed this type or something like it? I'd like a lite weight starter to shed some pounds any suggestions? Cheers
Eric

The powermaster starters are pretty good, I like mine. They are pricey compared to stock.

I got a mini starter from alterstart on eBay, Texas based company. $150 delivered couldn't be happier with it. I think they go for $129 now.

I found the biggest factor into the bulky starter being a real p.i.t.a is the fact you gotta wire it and hold it. If you buy a quick disconnect kit it makes like a lot easier. I made my own with a gm. style weather pack and a terminal for the batt cable. It makes life easy even with full length headers with the car on jack stands. Don't get me wrong if I had the money I would buy one I had one but traded it for parts lol.

Thanks guys I have a summit cat. I noticed that they are rated to the compression of the engine, Does it really matter ?
Thanks Eric... I will see if performance Improvements can get the powermaster again does the compression matter with these?
Should I purchase the heat shield wrap as well ?

I have not had any issues with heat. Mines not wrapped or have a heat shield. They are rated by compression, so you don't need the ones rated for the higher levels. Sure beats trying to manhandle the stock starter, these things are light comparatively.

Thanks for the info Copper, 70cutty.
Thanks Eric... I'm going to take your advice and go with the Powemaster 9610 starter for my 76 350, I figure I skip the heat wrap for now as I've the shorty headers and see if its hard starting after a long drive.

Cheers Eric

I doubt you wil have any issues with heat soak. My starter is very close to the headers and I have never had any issues.

Did you guys have to use any shims or did they bolt right up? also I noticed it says it will work with the solenoid down. did any of you guys do that?

I didn't install mine myself, I actually just had it done with the headers, I had a look under the car after the install and it appeared to be in with the solenoid up I'm not sure if it needed to be shimmed or not. I can tell you I notice its a lot noisier at start up, It fires up nice but it seems a lot louder than the stock starter. I have the 9610 powermaster. Maybe other will chime in on this thread.

No shims necessary. FYI the sbc mini starters fit our Olds V8's, have one on the Olds powered 4x4.

Olds 307 and 403, did you find your mini starter was somewhat louder than the original when it cranked over? Or different sounding perhaps?

The mini starters are geared, so they will sound different.

They are sure a lot cheaper. Do they fit without modification?

Thanks guys, I figured it needed to be shimmed by the way it sounded but that wasn't the case, it is suppose to sound the way it does .
Cheers guys
